I've got some miniature wire-rimmed glasses, and those metal compartments with thin plastic inserts disintegrate much too quickly for my liking. Fortunately, I can jam two of my specs into this space - whenever I put in contact lenses, I place a square of dense foam material from the craft store inside so that both pairs remain safely apart within it. Maybe you could tweak it to fit bigger glasses instead.
