People first fashioned eyeglasses to correct vision problems around 1286 AD. Invented by Salvino D'Armate, an Italian craftsman from Pisa, these primitive spectacles consisted of two concave lenses of polished crystal glass set into frames made from wood or metal. D'Armate's design improved eyesight for people with nearsightedness and farsightedness by allowing them to see clearly objects up close or far away. Initially, these early glasses were quite heavy and not very comfortable to wear due to their crude construction and the weight of the glass lenses. However, they revolutionized the way people perceived the world around them and paved the way for more advanced eyewear designs in centuries to come. The invention of eyeglasses is a testament to human ingenuity and our desire to improve ourselves and our surroundings.
