Glass Bottle Cutting Jig
thingiverse
The glass cutter is a Husky brand tool purchased at Home Depot for approximately $2. Apply a small amount of oil to the cutting wheel before starting, or you can cut dry but the oil will make the wheel last longer. Rotate the bottle in either direction with slight downward pressure until there is a clear line around the entire bottle without any gaps. The line does not have to be deep. Next, light a candle and hold the line on the bottle just above the flame while rotating until it's warm. Then dip the bottle into a bucket or large cup of water up to the line. Repeat this process until the bottle separates into two pieces, which may take several attempts. You can speed up the process by using ice water but be aware that there is a higher chance the bottle will crack going up or down the side instead of along the line. After the bottle has separated, use wet sandpaper starting at 60-100 grit to smooth out any jagged or sharp edges on the inside and outside of the rim. Once you have knocked down the high spots, smooth it further with 200-220 grit for a comfortable surface. Wash the glass thoroughly before using. Note that I used a rotary tool with a coarse drum sanding attachment to lightly hit some bad high spots, but if you do this wear eye protection and a facemask/respirator. Also use gloves and keep the rim of the glass moist to prevent glass dust from getting into the air. You don't want to breathe that stuff or get it in your eyes. Printer Settings: * Printer Brand: Solidoodle * Printer Model: Solidoodle 4 * Rafts: No * Supports: No * Resolution: 0.3mm * Infill: 15% Notes: At least two perimeters are required, no brim needed. If you're cutting wine bottles, adjust the size accordingly. I've included the 123D Design file if you need to make any modifications since the glass cutter hole will obviously need to stay the same size while the rest of the pieces are enlarged. Post-Printing Instructions: Drill holes in the tabs on the bottom of the jig and attach it to a surface so that the bottom of the bottle you're cutting is flat against the back of the jig. If the glass cutter is a little loose in the jig, a small amount of epoxy will keep it from getting pushed out while rolling the bottle.
