Inspired by Glaser-Dirks' DG-200 sailplane, the model represents a 15-meter class aircraft introduced in 1977. In 1978, wingtip extensions were added to create a 17-meter class version. Part of the same generation as the ASW-20 PIK-29 and Mosquito, a total of 192 DG-200 models were built; some later versions featured carbon fiber spars. The DG-200 also served as the basis for the development of the DG-400 motor glider.
