The DG-200 sailplane emerged from Glaser-Dirks' production line in 1977 as a 15-meter class glider, with wingtip extensions introduced a year later to create a 17-meter class version. It is part of the same generation as the ASW-20 PIK-29 and Mosquito, with a total of 192 units constructed; some later models featured carbon fiber spars. The DG-200 also served as the basis for the development of the DG-400 motor glider.
