Human: Gladiator Part of a stunning mosaic from Zliten, Libya's Leptis Magna, dating back to the 2nd century AD, showcases a thraex taking on a murmillo, while a hoplomachus stands tall with another murmillo signaling defeat to the referee. A matched pair is also visible. A gladiator was an armed combatant who thrilled audiences in ancient Rome's Republic and Empire through violent confrontations with fellow gladiators, wild beasts, and condemned criminals. Some brave gladiators volunteered their lives and social status for a chance to shine in the arena. Most, however, were scorned as slaves, trained under harsh conditions, socially outcast, and even segregated in death. Regardless of their background, gladiators offered spectators a glimpse into Rome's warrior values and inspired admiration by fighting or dying with honor. They were celebrated in art and everyday objects throughout the Roman world, solidifying their status as entertainers. The origins of gladiatorial combat remain unclear, but evidence suggests it began during funeral rites in the 3rd century BC Punic Wars. It quickly became a staple of politics and social life in ancient Rome, leading to increasingly lavish and expensive games. Gladiator battles dominated for nearly a thousand years, peaking between the 1st century BC and 2nd century AD. The games eventually faded during the early 5th century after Christianity became the Roman Empire's state church in 380, although beast hunts continued into the 6th century.
