The Borghese Gladiator - a depiction of a fierce warrior originally part of the Italian collection that bears its name - actually recalls the athletic heroism of Lysippos. This piece, whose tree trunk proudly displays the signature of Agasias of Ephesus, son of Dositheus, is a work that echoes the great bronze sculptor's style from the fourth century BC. However, the accented musculature bears the unmistakable mark of the Pergamene school, which blended Lysippos' athletic heroism with the pathos of the Hellenistic period to create something truly unique. This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory that aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks and landmarks from around the globe for public access. The goal of Scan The World is to make these incredible works available free of charge, and it's an open source community effort where anyone can contribute.
