Gjermundbu Viking Helmet

The helmet from Gjermundbu Farm is the most well-preserved Viking helmet in existence. Discovered within a richly furnished man's grave, it was found alongside a chain-mail shirt, a sword, two spears, two axes, a shield, riding gear, gaming pieces, and equipment for preparing food. The individual buried had been a member of an elite group of equestrian warriors who excelled in battle. In accordance with Viking funeral customs, the helmet was deliberately destroyed by piercing it with the spears that lay nearby – one stab from each. Photo: Ellen C. Holte, Museum of Cultural History UiO I chose to create this model because I was requested to print a Viking helmet. However, most of the helmets I found featured horns, which contradicted what I learned in school many years ago. I decided to investigate further. The Viking Horned Helmet is a myth that has no basis in written descriptions or images from the Viking Age. Our closest reference to horned helmets comes from the Berserkers – fierce warriors who were not Vikings.
