This is an image of Fiuliano de' Medici (1453-1478), Lorenzo's younger brother and a key figure in Florence's complex history. The brothers narrowly escaped assassination during Easter mass at the Florence Cathedral, a brazen plot orchestrated by their sworn enemies, the Pazzi family. Lorenzo managed to stay alive, but his sibling did not, leading one to wonder why this portrait of Fiuliano was created - perhaps as a poignant tribute to honor his memory after such a senseless tragedy.
