Giovanni or Gian Battista Sommariva, an Italian statesman, lived in Milan until his death on January 6, 1826. He was active in politics within both the Cisalpine Republic and the Second French Republic. Sommariva also supported artistic endeavors as a prominent patron of arts. The Italian politician commissioned two busts from Thorvaldsen, but their professional relationship often turned contentious due to Sommariva's sharp critiques of Thorvaldsen's work. In his private letters, Sommariva even voiced discontent over another project, 'Alexander the Great's Entry into Babylon', prompting Thorvaldsen to counter that Sommariva lacked artistic taste.
