Gilbertson inspired bluebird house
thingiverse
This is my take on the Gilbertson style bluebird house. This was designed in Tinkercad and tweaked by printing partial test pieces and making small adjustments to get them to fit nicely. It is designed to mount to ½” ID metal electrical conduit with a screw hole in back so it does not spin, I will likely drive a piece of rebar into the ground which the pipe will slip over for added stability. I have included my final test files as well if you want to test before using a bunch of filament. The pictures are of my prototype print, the reinforced opening is now part of the final bottom file. The bottom piece was printed using concentric infill pattern which made the center of the vertical wall hollow, the goal was to have it insulate the bird house but I have no idea if it will actually help. I have printed in PLA but it would be more durable if printed in PETG. I have some copper foil I plan to cover the roof with before setting it outside. Both big pieces took over 24 hours each to print. I have also included a thinner top to reduce the filament and print time, the thick one is overkill. I resized the clip for the pin https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1569698 , the only part not original. Hope it works well, I will update with photos once installed and hopefully with bluebirds! Let me know how it prints for you. UPDATE: Covered the top with copper flashing for durability and looks. Installed in yard (may move it to a more open area when snow is gone and ground is thawed. Time will tell if the bluebirds find it this spring.
