Rising from the fossilized earth of Liaoning Province in China lies a mighty theropod named Gigantoraptor - its name roughly translates to 'giant seizer' or 'gigantic abductor'. This massive bird, part of the early Cretaceous Period, stood approximately three metres tall at the hips. Fossilized tracks indicate it could grow even larger, but this is uncertain. Despite standing like a modern-day ostrich or emu on long powerful legs, the Gigantoraptor weighed roughly a half-ton - a substantial mass given its stature. The robust body supported an estimated weight between 230-330 kilograms per square centimetre of ground surface pressure, making it a force to be reckoned with in its native China during the Cretaceous. An estimated two and a half meters tall when running or at full stretch on powerful hind limbs.
