Gigantic carnivorous dinosaur of the Cretaceous period, Giganotosaurus was a formidable predator that roamed the earth during the late age of reptiles. Measuring approximately 12 to 15 meters in length and weighing an estimated 6-8 tons, this massive creature was a force to be reckoned with. Its name translates to "giant southern lizard" in Greek, due to its enormous size and the fact that it was discovered in South America. With powerful legs and razor-sharp claws, Giganotosaurus was well-equipped to take down its prey, likely large herbivores such as sauropods. Despite its fearsome reputation, however, Giganotosaurus is considered one of the most poorly understood dinosaurs known to science, with many aspects of its behavior and physiology still shrouded in mystery.
