This sculpture is credited to the Pre-Olmec Monte Alto Culture, with some scholars proposing that the Olmec Culture emerged in this part of the Pacific Lowlands. It's highly probable that the Monte Alto Culture was Mesoamerica's first complex culture and the precursor to all other cultures in the region. Research indicates that this head possesses magnetic properties, implying that Pre-Olmec civilizations (around 4000 years ago) were remarkably advanced; evidence of early experiments with magnetism dates back only 2000 years to ancient China.
