The colossal isopod (Bathynomus giganteus) is a remarkable species of marine crustacean belonging to the order Isopoda. These massive isopods are frequently discovered in icy waters with a depth ranging from 310 to 2140 meters (1,020–7,020 ft) in the West Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The unusually enormous size of the colossal isopod has been attributed to a phenomenon known as deep-sea gigantism, where invertebrates living in cold deep waters tend to grow larger and enjoy longer lifespans.
