The Megalonyx jeffersonii mandible fragment, uncovered in 1917 by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History at Saltville, Virginia, was temporarily loaned to the Museum of the Middle Appalachians on the 100th anniversary of those excavations, arranged by Blaine Schubert of Eastern Tennessee State University. The fossil was then carefully scanned in three dimensions at the Museum of the Middle Appalachians using a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner, courtesy of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
