Host crabs are semiterrestrial crabs belonging to the subfamily Ocypodinae, commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. They inhabit deep burrows in the intertidal zone, where they feed on small animals as generalist scavengers and predators. The term "ghost crab" originates from their nocturnal habits and pale coloration. They are also referred to as sand crabs, although this name applies to other unrelated crab species. Characteristics of the subfamily include one claw being significantly larger than the other, thick elongated eyestalks, and a box-like body shape. Unlike male fiddler crabs, however, the differences in claw sizes are not as pronounced. The Ocypodinae subfamily comprises 22 species across two genera.
