Beneath Wendell Castle's ingenious disguise, a grandfather clock doesn't lurk, nor does he make a statement about time. Castle's breathtaking Ghost Clock is an unsettling sculpture so motionless it conveys immortality. Crafted from laminated and bleached Honduras mahogany, Ghost Clock showcases a masterful trompe l'oeil, a French term meaning "to deceive the eye." Here, the "curtains" aren't soft, delicate fabric but intricately carved wood that resembles muslin in hue and texture. What we perceive as reality is actually an illusion.
