Gheorghe Lazăr was born on June 5, 1779, in Avrig, Sibiu County, and passed away there on September 17, 1823. This Transylvanian-born Romanian scholar founded the first Romanian language school in Bucharest in 1818. As a subject of the Habsburg Empire, Lazăr was born into a family of peasants and studied theology in Sibiu, Cluj, and Vienna, but also showed a strong interest in history and philosophy. His admiration for Napoleon I, along with his radical opinions, prevented him from becoming a priest, forcing him to flee to Wallachia where he worked as a tutor and engineer, earning the respect of boyar Constantin Bălăceanu, who was in charge of administering schools throughout the Principality. Lazăr's school marked a significant break with the tradition of schooling in Greek that had prevailed under Phanariote rule. It also represented a step towards secularism in education. As one of the first wave of Romanian Transylvanian teachers to shape schooling in both Wallachia and Moldavia throughout the 19th century, Lazăr played a crucial role in shaping the education system.
