Germanicus

myminifactory

This highly idealized portrait is titled 'Germanicus', a celebrated member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and a renowned military leader in the early Roman Empire. Born in Rome, Italia, to Nero Claudius Drusus and his wife Antonia Minor, he was known by either Nero Claudius Drusus at birth, in honor of his father, or Tiberius Claudius Nero after his uncle, the second Roman emperor Tiberius. The agnomen Germanicus was added to his full name in 9 BC as a posthumous tribute to his victories in Germania. By AD 4, he was formally adopted by Tiberius as his son and heir, thus leaving the Claudii family for the Julii. Following Roman naming conventions, he took on the name Germanicus Julius Caesar. The origins of this sculpture are unclear, but it may have originated from a working mold housed at the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg.
