The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank that Krauss-Maffei developed for the West German Army in the 1970s. The tank made its debut in service in 1979, replacing the earlier Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German military. It features a powerful 120 mm smoothbore cannon and is equipped with a V-12 twin-turbo diesel engine. Multiple versions have been used by Germany's armed forces and 12 other European countries, plus several non-European nations including Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Singapore, and Turkey. The Leopard 2 has seen action in Kosovo as part of the German Army, and it has also played a role in Afghanistan with contributions from the Dutch, Danish, and Canadian troops to the International Security Assistance Force, as well as seeing action in Syria with the Turkish Armed Forces.
