The "Hunting Tiger" is a nickname for a German heavy tank destroyer used during World War II. Officially known as Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf. B, it was built on an extended chassis of the Tiger II tank. The ordnance inventory code for this vehicle was Sd. Kfz. 186. Weighing in as the heaviest armored fighting vehicle deployed during World War II, the Jagdtiger is also the heaviest armored vehicle to have entered mass production. Its main armament consisted of a 128 mm PaK 44 L/55 gun that could out-range and out-gun any Allied tank fielded at the time. The Jagdtiger saw limited action from late 1944 to the end of the war on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, with Tiger ace Otto Carius commanding a company of these vehicles. His memoir provides one of the few accounts of Jagdtigers in combat. Although 150 were ordered, only between 77 and 88 were actually produced due to mechanical issues stemming from its excessive weight. Today, three Jagdtigers remain on display in museums.
