The gerenuk /ˈɡɛrəˌnʊk, ɡəˈrɛnək/ Somali: garanuug (Litocranius walleri) is a distinctive antelope found in the Horn of Africa and dry regions of East Africa. Named by naturalist Victor Brooke in 1878, the gerenuk stands out for its remarkably long neck and legs. Reaching a height of 80-105 centimeters or 31-41 inches tall, this antelope weighs between 28 and 52 kilograms or 62-115 pounds. Two distinct color patterns are visible on the smooth coat: a reddish-brown back referred to as the "saddle" and lighter flanks ranging from fawn to buff in color. Males possess lyre-shaped horns that curve backward before slightly tilting forward, measuring between 25-44 centimeters or 9.8-17.3 inches long.
