Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov (Russian: Georgiy Konstantinovich Zhukov; IPA: [ɡʲɪˈorgʲɪj kənstɐnˈtʲinəvʲɪtɕ ˈʐukəf]; December 1 [O.S. November 19] 1896 - June 18, 1974), was a career officer in the Red Army of the Soviet Union who rose to become Chief of General Staff, Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Minister of Defence and a high-ranking member of the Politburo. Throughout World War II, Zhukov played key roles in numerous battles before commanding the 1st Belorussian Front during the Battle of Berlin. Zhukov's pivotal role in World War II earned him significant recognition, allowing him to take part in signing the German Instrument of Surrender and leading a procession through the streets of Moscow for the 1945 Victory Parade.
