George Wyllie
myminifactory
The ingenious and self-taught sculptor George Wyllie (1921-2012) brought a multitude of techniques into play and frequently presented his creations as outdoor spectacles. Notably, the 'Straw Locomotive' was suspended from the Finnieston crane on the Clyde before finally being set ablaze, making a poignant commentary on Glasgow's waning industrial legacy. Wyllie's clever and lighthearted demeanor made his work relatable and well-liked, yet his artistic intention remained steadfastly serious. He firmly believed that art should continually pose questions - referring to his craft as 'scul?ture'. Inspired by the German artist Joseph Beuys, Wyllie in turn continues to inspire a new generation of contemporary Scottish artists.
