Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin (July 1, 1804 – June 8, 1876), known by her pen name George Sand, was a French writer and memoirist of great renown. She made headlines with her high-profile romantic affairs with artists such as Frédéric Chopin, the renowned composer and pianist, and Alfred de Musset, a celebrated writer. George Sand wrote boldly: "My name is not Marie-Aurore de Saxe, Marquise of Dudevant, as many biographers have claimed, but Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin. My husband, François Dudevant, holds no title; his highest rank was that of infantry second lieutenant." George Sand's reputation faced scrutiny when she began wearing men's clothing in public, a move she justified by pointing out the practicality and affordability of such attire compared to traditional noblewoman's dresses. By donning male dress, George Sand gained greater freedom to move about Paris than most women of her time, allowing her access to venues often barred to females, even those of high social standing. Another shocking aspect of George Sand's behavior was her public smoking of tobacco; at the time, neither aristocrats nor gentry had accepted the practice of women freely indulging in this habit, especially in public. However, Marie d'Agoult, Franz Liszt's paramour, also smoked large cigars, sparking similar controversy.
