Created by Alexander Handyside Ritchie, a man born to a brickmaker and ornamental plasterer in Musselburgh, pursued his passion for art at Edinburgh School of Arts, where he studied alongside architecture and anatomy classes. He further honed his skills in Rome from 1826-1839 before establishing a studio at 92 Princes Street in 1842. From this location, Ritchie crafted portrait busts that showcased his exceptional talent, including the striking likeness of George Meikle Kemp, one of the architects behind the iconic Scott Monument. Visitors to Edinburgh can still marvel at Ritchie's impressive body of work displayed in prominent locations such as the Central Library, the Royal College of Physicians on Queen Street, and The Commercial bank on George Street.
