George John Whyte-Melville (1821-1878) was a prolific novelist and poet who turned his back on an army career after serving in the Crimean War. He then devoted himself to writing and field sports, living life as a country gentleman with a passion that knew no bounds. With over twenty novels under his belt, Whyte-Melville drew heavily from his military experiences and a lifetime of sporting adventures. A renowned expert on hunting practice and attire, he was held in high esteem by his peers. Tragically, his life came to an abrupt end when his horse fell while out fox hunting. This exquisite marble bust, crafted with precision by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890), bears witness to the enduring legacy of this literary giant.
