George Graville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833), was a prominent figure in politics, art patronage, and land ownership. The 1st Duke of Sutherland statue was skillfully crafted by Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey (1781-1841) from marble, signed, and dated 1830. A shrewd investor, Sutherland's assets included a significant stake in the Bridgewater Canal and a one-fifth share in the Manchester and Liverpool Railway. He also generously supported the National Gallery and served as President of the British Institution, which commissioned the first version of this portrait, initiated by Lord Farnborough in 1828. This particular example from 1830 was specifically created for Sutherland's wife. Although Chantrey reduced his fee to £157, the bill remained unpaid during his lifetime.
