George Coșbuc was born on September 20, 1866, in Hordou, Bistrița-Năsăud County. He became a renowned Romanian poet, translator, teacher, and journalist. His poetry often described rural life, praising its joys and eulogizing its struggles. Coșbuc's birthplace was later renamed Coșbuc in his honor. He passed away on May 9, 1918, in Bucharest. Despite being co-opted by Communist propagandists for Marxist-Leninist rhetoric, he remains a master poet, skilled translator, and affectionate chronicler of Romania's people and geography.
