George Canning (1770-1827) led a faction of liberal Tories during Lord Liverpool's tenure as Prime Minister from 1812 to 1827, ultimately succeeding him in that role in 1827. The initial version of this sculpture was commissioned in 1827 and marked the beginning of Chantrey's numerous busts of prominent Tory politicians. Studio assistants worked tirelessly to produce precise copies of such public figures, which were then completed by Chantrey to be considered as his own work. Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey (1781-1841) sculpted this marble bust in 1821.
