GEOPARKEA - SAN TELMO DETALLE PREVIUW

In the rear of San Telmo's hermitage, we can clearly see the sequence of fysch strata, where hard layers (limestones) and soft ones (marls) alternate. We can also observe that these layers form a fold and are affected by a series of fractures called faults. These small structures respond to the deformation process that these sediments underwent for many millions of years due to the collision between Iberia and Europe, which ultimately led to the uplift of the Pyrenees and Basque Mountains. Although it may seem trivial, over time and with the consistency of tectonic forces, rocks deform like modeling clay.
