Here are the layers of sediment, one for every meter down into the earth's crust. Each section is a snapshot of what lies beneath our feet, a window into the planet's ancient past. The top layer, representing just one meter below the surface, shows us a mixture of soil and pebbles. Below this, we find layers of sand and silt, deposited over time by rivers and streams. Next comes a layer of clay, compacted tightly together to form a solid foundation. Beneath this lies a section of limestone, carved out by acidic water flowing through the rock. Further down, we encounter a layer of shale, its flat layers like pages in an ancient book. And below that, a thick slab of granite, its rugged surface etched with the stories of eons past. As we drill deeper, each new meter brings us closer to the earth's very core.
