Geographos is one of the oldest identified Earth-grazing asteroids. It was first spotted in September 1951 as part of a comprehensive celestial survey sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Many Earth-grazing asteroids are believed to be fragments created by collisions between asteroids within the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, which are then jolted into orbit paths that bring them close to Earth.
