The Genio della Morte plaster cast reproduces the bust of this masterpiece, which is part of the Monumento funebre di Clemente XII created by Antonio Canova in 1792; it embodies the timeless beauty celebrated by Winckelmann in his writings about neoclassical ideals. The Busto di papa Clemente XII shares the same monument and is housed at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Achille Forti, along with the cast. Both works were generously donated to city authorities by descendants of the Pindemonte branch of the Rezzonico family, who were related to Pope Clement. The Genio della Morte, an original creation that combines elements of a Christian angel and classical divinity, showcases Canova's innovative spirit: a figure poised between two distinct worlds.
