The proposed clamp design for the NASA GrabCAD challenge on January 22, 2015, consists of a two-piece structure that meets all specified requirements and offers additional features. Firstly, it allows attachment of two standard seat track segments with a solid mounting interface, ensuring minimal deflection and maximum strength while providing flexibility for 16 radial mounting positions. Secondly, the clamp assembly (clamp and latch) is a single, 3D-printed unit that requires no additional parts or cleaning up, as it doesn't need support structures during printing. Thirdly, the latch mechanism automatically engages a spring-loaded catch when closed, securing the handrail around the perimeter. To release the catch and remove the clamp assembly, pressure on the tab is applied. This one-handed operation eliminates the need to manage or lose any loose parts. Fourthly, both components are designed for simple 3D printing with 95% of features visible in the Z-axis. The design avoids sharp corners in the Z elevation to optimize X and Y axis velocity during print. To be printed from ABS using a 0.4mm nozzle, the clamp requires six perimeters all around and hexagon fill at 30-40%. Notably, there are no perpendicular overhangs or balconies, so no support or cleanup is needed after printing.
