Generative Algorithms #1. Shape generator and marching cubes.

A new series will be launched, featuring numerous issues but with infrequent releases to allow for algorithm research and example preparation. The dimetrodon is the mascot of this series. Key tools include Rhino (Grasshopper) and t-splines, as well as Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks. Starting with built-in Inventor tools, we will analyze a console beam with a square section, fixed at one end and loaded at the other. The initial shape is suboptimal for bending stress resistance. Autodesk Shape Generator optimizes this by removing excess material but offers the part as mesh (STL). Using Grasshopper's Cocoon component allows surface smoothing and conversion to t-spline surfaces for further work. Useful links include generative algorithms, metaballs, marching cubes, Cocoon, Autodesk Shape Generator, and topology optimization add-ins like ParetoWorks.
