Pershing Park, an innovative design by M. Paul Friedberg, was officially unveiled on May 14, 1981, in partnership with Pershing Memorial, a poignant tribute to Wallace K. Harrison's masterful creation. Authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1956, the Pershing Memorial stands as a national testament to the commanding general of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I and his courageous soldiers. The memorial proudly showcases Robert White's stunning bronze sculpture of Pershing, depicting him in uniform, with his hat held firmly in his left hand, his right hand poised to raise his field glasses as he gazes out towards the west. Installed in 1983, the statue stands majestically on a sleek, rectangular base of polished Dakota mahogany granite, engraved with Pershing's birth and death dates (1860-1948). The striking statue is easily visible from the street along a carefully crafted vista created by the steps leading into the park from the corner of 14th and Pennsylvania Avenue (south), as well as throughout the interior of the park.
