Light passes through a prism and is split into its individual colors, each bending at a slightly different angle to produce a spectrum of light that displays a range of colors. This phenomenon occurs when light encounters a medium with a different optical density than the one it was originally traveling in. The extent to which light bends depends on both the wavelength of the light and the angle at which it passes through the prism, resulting in distinct bands of color that can be seen as separate entities within the spectrum.
