A gear, or cogwheel, is a rotating component with cut teeth that mesh with another toothed part for torque transmission. Typically, both gears have identical shaped teeth. When two or more gears work together, they form a transmission which can offer mechanical advantage via a gear ratio, making it classified as a simple machine.
