Geared Polyhedron
thingiverse
This is a geared polyhedron, don't you think? Is it a lofted cube octahedron or maybe a simplified hexakis-octahedron? Nobody knows for sure... To Make Basic Geared Polyhedron: Print 1 core - PolyCoreOBJ_STL.stl Print 18 pins - UsePinsOBJ_STL.stl Print 12 large gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsBig.stl Print 6 small gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsSmall.stl To Make Geared Polyhedron with Base and Turning Handles: Print 1 core - PolyCoreOBJ_STL.stl Print 18 pins - UsePinsOBJ_STL.stl Print 12 large gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsBig.stl Print 3 small gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsSmall.stl Print 2 handled gears - SmallGearWithTurner_STL.stl Print 1 base - SmallGearWithBase_STL.stl If you print the base, notice a 1.75" wide by .5" tall recess in the bottom front of the base - it's perfect for a plaque or something. How I Designed This: I started modeling the modified octahedron in LW. Using a gear ratio of 2:3, I divided the distance between vertices and calculated the angle between bevel gears and radius of pitch circles. Decided on 16:24 teeth gears, made bevel gears, cut out pin holes from gears and core. Rotated gears into position, copied original modified octahedron and scaled it up. Then used scaled up model to cut all the gears.
