Geared Extruder
cults3d
I designed a new Extruder for an upgraded printer with a "bowden setup". My goal was to create a simple, strong design that presses the filament firmly against the driver gear. The extruder includes an adjustable guide for effortless filament management. I've kept the gland nut in place for now but incorporated parts for standard Teflon tube holders for flexibility. On my test printer, the gland nut performs exceptionally well, having successfully completed a 20-hour print run with this setup. However, on another printer that operates at significantly higher speeds (60mm/s and above), the gland nut fails to hold its grip effectively. To mitigate this issue, I've found that applying Kapton tape to the tube greatly improves performance. I'm still experimenting with alternative tube holder methods. The small filament driver, measuring 11mm in diameter, is mounted on an M8x50mm bolt. Using my lathe, I machined a 5mm end on this bolt to securely hold the driver in place. Please refer to the accompanying images for further details. This design is optimized for use with 1.75mm filament; users working with larger filaments (2.85mm or 3mm) will need to enlarge the holes to match their material's specifications. If you have any questions regarding this project, feel free to ask.
