These bowls are actually functioning as a pair of gears. They appear to be bevel gear wheels, but technically, they are straight spur gears. They operate perfectly well when sitting flat on the table. This was achieved by varying the profile shift (addendum modification) of the involute from negative to positive along the Z-Axis. The mechanical engineering aspect of this is quite complex, but these bowls do serve a useful purpose for holding sweets.
