Gearbug #2
thingiverse
Gearbugs represent toys crafted from gears; specifically, Gearbug #2 features a planetary gear system designed for manual rotation. This activity can be surprisingly addictive! To build it, you'll need an M3x12 bolt and nut. You can preview its motion here: http://authenticinvention.com/images/gearbug/GearBug2sm.gif For construction, use a laser cutter to carve components from 1/8th inch MDF or plywood, utilizing an Inkscape file. Cut the layers in black, blue, and red order. Attach the large ring to the back, ensuring correct alignment. Glue the sun gear to the handle with the radial holes aligned. Allow wood glue to dry before proceeding. Insert the bolt from below and position three planet gears evenly around the outside. Carefully place the handle and sun gear in the center. Apply thread locking compound to the nut, ensuring it's flush with the screw top without over-tightening or loosening. Clean off excess locking compound and let the glue dry before turning the handle for the first time.
