Humans use high-end mechanical devices like front wheel drive transmission and limited slip differentials on cars that handle poorly to counteract wheelspin. These transmissions come in multiple gear sets of either helical-cut gears or H-patters, often synchronized and semi-synchronized manual gearboxes using helicoid or spiral gear trains in FWD. Rear wheel drives generally don't have as many different gear ratios as do 4x4 vehicles and they normally run in full-time two-wheel drive configurations in off-road settings due to increased fuel efficiency. The term 'box' originated with its relation to early transmission devices and cars of olden days where it acted like an ordinary gearbox or engine compartment housing within.
