Gear Sphere puzzle (failed project)
thingiverse
This is a complex mechanical puzzle that I'm abandoning due to its unsatisfactory design. I will no longer pursue this project. Here's how it works: Rotate the individual color segment rings independently, and flip the black and white halves over. The problems with this puzzle are: Gears sometimes pop off when they're not aligned properly (change the bevel angle of the gears). Colored rings get stuck together occasionally (add a support layer between them that's fixed to the black and white halves). The gear ratio isn't well-suited for the size of the segments - use 60-degree segments instead. Here's how to make one: There are STL files available for a standard version that's too large, as well as an 80% downscaled version (see photo). I've printed: Two sets of each: gear1small in black and white, gear2small with four colors, and gear3small with four colors. I recommend printing: Gear1small in black and white (two sets), gear2small with six colors (two sets), and gear3_60degsmall with six colors (two sets). For assembly instructions, refer to my other rotating puzzle projects. The code for this project is released under the Getriebe.scad non-commercial license, which isn't mine.
