A hypoid gear, also known as a skew-cone gear, is a type of bevel gear that has an offset axis between the pinion and the gear. This design allows for greater contact area, reduced noise, and increased load capacity compared to traditional bevel gears. The name "hypoid" comes from the Greek words hypo (meaning "under") and eidos (meaning "form" or "shape"), reflecting the geometry of the gear teeth.
