The chamber design is improved with a ridge along its sides, allowing "stuffing boxes" to slide in and snap onto rotating cams. In the assembled state, the cams are rotated down, compressing the neoprene gasket by 35% for optimum sealing. The retention ridge and cam pins ensure containment of 5.2kN hydrostatic force under pressurized conditions, while a -1bar vacuum poses no issue. However, FEA reveals a borderline 1.2 factor of safety in the chamber sides, with gusseting providing minimal relief from deflection. A stainless steel casting using lost wax investment casting is proposed to enhance surface finish and suitability for loading conditions. This project was an engaging exercise provided by GE during Buffalo's freezing February.
