A cricket ball, weighing between 155.9 and 163.0 grams, is a hard, solid essential for playing cricket. Constructed from cork covered by leather, its manufacturing is strictly regulated at first-class level. The manipulation of the ball, through its physical properties, is crucial in bowling and dismissing batsmen. Fielding side works on the ball to achieve an optimum condition. Traditional red cricket balls are used in Test cricket, white ones in many one day matches, while training balls come in white, red and pink colors or as windballs and tennis balls with cricket motif for informal matches. As the match proceeds, the ball's quality declines affecting its properties and the game. Altering the state of the ball outside the rules is prohibited and 'ball tampering' has caused controversies. Despite their hardness, cricket balls have led to numerous injuries in matches with some fatalities recorded or attributed to them.
