Gate Valve Design Revealed Gate valves are used for general-purpose shutoff. The most commonly encountered design is a piston gate valve. It has an annular hole in its bonnet where the handwheel passes through to control the operation of the valve. Gate valves operate on a piston, which is driven by a hand crank, motor, or other power source, causing the piston to open or close and regulate fluid flow. The majority of gate valves use spring-assisted opening action for safety, and some also feature non-return valves to prevent backflow.
